Since 1934 a ship lift in Niederfinow has connected Berlin and the Baltic Seaport Stettin. The ship lift is operated daily up to 24 hours but reached its limit of capacity because of the high traffic volume resulting in long waiting times in the outer docks.
The new ship lift will lift the ships vertically with a counter-weight balance, suspended continuously by cables.
The outline of the new ship lift was designed by the Water and Shipping Authorities.
