The Challenge

Gent Sint-Pieters station, originally built for the 1913 World Exhibition, became a catalyst for urban growth in Ghent. Over a century later, the station and its surroundings require adaptation to meet modern needs. Designated as a “mixed development pool for living and working” under the Spatial Structure Plan for Flanders, the area faces the challenge of creating a high-quality urban environment that integrates housing, offices, leisure, and green spaces. Underutilized plots and vacant lands must be transformed into vibrant spaces, with Rijsenbergpark playing a central role in reconnecting the neighborhood and enhancing livability.

The Solution

Tractebel’s approach focuses on redefining Rijsenbergpark as a green anchor within the station district. The design introduces a multifunctional park that blends ecological value with social utility, offering spaces for relaxation, recreation, and community activities. Pathways and landscaping ensure seamless connections between new developments and existing neighborhoods, while public amenities foster accessibility and inclusivity. By integrating greenery into the urban fabric, the project creates a balanced environment that supports both mobility and quality of life.

The Impact

Rijsenbergpark, spanning around 6,300 m², will serve as a green corridor along Fabiolalaan between the Rijsenberg neighbourhood and the railway. The design prioritises the preservation and extension of green spaces, introducing varied topography and a mix of private, collective, and public areas for both quiet and active uses. Buildings are positioned for optimal sunlight, with open ground floors for community amenities. The park will feature a continuous all-wheelers path linking the station to Blaarmeersen, new public squares to improve local connectivity, and expanded woodlands with diverse vegetation to boost biodiversity. Generous green spaces will offer access to new buildings and encourage resident interaction.
